I decided to have my dinner at the restaurant bar instead of a table. I don’t usually order an appetizer, but I heard the appetizer special was avocado salad and it intrigued me. I didn’t ask the specifics and when it was served it was a piece of art and a taste sensation . The tower of tomatoes were just picked from the owner’s garden. It was stunning and the perfect ice breaker for conversation with others seated around the bar.

We shared introductions, reasons for selecting the restaurant and plans for the evening. People in groups said they always chose the bar for the opportunity to meet new people and extend conversation beyond who they came with. There were lulls when we were actively eating, but picked up again when second courses arrived.

If I had decided to eat at a table, I would have mostly by myself and quiet taking things in. Enjoying a meal with new friends gave the experience energy and zest. We all left smiling.

How do you approach dining out as a solo?
