In the Friday NY times email alert was a short list of weekend events. A show named “Lilia” was being performed by playwright and actress Libby Skala, at the NY Public Library, Jefferson Market Library in Chelsea caught my eye.

The play was about the life of Austrian actress Lilia Skala and the relationship with her granddaughter, Libby. This stunning one woman show was previously performed Off-Broadway and at Fringe Festivals. Reading about the Library, I learned it was historically a court house and a prison. From the outside the building was reminiscent of a grand European church. Inside it had high, high ceilings and an abundance of beautiful stain glass windows.

The basement jail cells were transformed to an open plan space housing the Reference Department. A series of brick arches made it easy to imagine the jail’s design. Adjacent to the court building used to be a women’s house of detention and there was mention of Mae West visiting.

This faceted adventure transported me to another place and time. The local residents in attendance provided further detail including the story behind the Jefferson Market Gardens next door. The play, the building and story sharing contributed to the exceptional experience that was free.
